Sintra is a charming Portuguese town and UNESCO World Heritage site located just 30 minutes drive from Lisbon. Hidden within its hills are whimsical palaces and the ruins of a Moors castle. Sintra can easily be done as a day trip from Lisbon (check out my guide on what to do and where to eat here).
Pena Palace
Pena Palace looks like it came straight out of a fairytale. Perched upon the tip of Serra, Pena Palace is easily the most famous palaces and up there with the best things to do in Sintra for sure. With popularity, comes crowds, so make sure to get there for opening time to avoid queuing.
Quinta da Regaleira
Originally built between 1904 – 1910, this four-hectare estate belongs in a fantasy movie. From gargoyles, caves to turrets and an octagonal tower with a much-photographed spiral staircase. Set amongst giant woodland trees with waterfalls and ornate bridges.
